Shipwreck in the Ungava
A sad shipwreck that had become a state secret even for those who lived through it.
Built in England in 1919, the Aigle d'océan was a 432-ton tug belonging to Groupe Desgagnés that sank off Ungava Bay on August 20, 1975, its cargo ripping open its hull. Four crew members perished in the sinking, including the chief engineer, who - not wanting to injure his colleagues already in the lifeboat - threw himself into the water thinking he could reach the makeshift boat. Shortly afterwards, the ship sank before the eyes of the crew; his body was found two hours later.
